Hi again!
Personally, I find the idea of "One Laptop per Child" to be - a bit strange. These kids have rather different needs than a laptop.
On the other hand, apparently this will take place, so we might as well make sure that the kids get a good laptop with some useful software, instead of some MS Office stuff.
Veeery useful, of course, would be ChipWits - learn how to solve logical problems, learn how to program instead of just listening to MP3 and watching videos.
I'd love to write ChipWits on that system - been wanting to ever since I heard of the OLPC concept. To do this, however, I'd have to know in detail which systems are available. Linux? Which version? gcc? KDE? Gnome? Which graphics systems are available?
If you have any info, please let me know _________________ http://www.breueronline.de/klaus/chipwits/

It didn't quite come in at $100 per laptop. The streamlined mass distribution non profit price came closer to $170, but that is still a good price. There is some competition entering the market, even at that non profit level. Intel has introduced their own lowball laptop and is undercutting the OLPC initiative. Also there is rumored to be a Chinese company working on the same concept.
Stay tuned. _________________ Our sun is 8 1/2 minutes older than the original. |
